Learn How To Build An Electric Skateboard For Under $300 CAD (2019)

Introduction:With the need for transportation along with the increase in gas prices, individuals are now seeking more efficient ways to get around. The only issue with these alternatives, however, is high cost and inaccessibility to the public. In this tutorial, we will be showing you how to build your own electric skateboard for just $300. Components Required:Hub Motors:For this build, instead of using the pulley system we use dual drive hub motors; mainly for simplicity (the pulley system requires more moving parts and mounting hardware than the hub motors). The hub motors used are rated for 600W, 90mm in diameter, and come together with the motors and wheels on trucks. The package also came with the non-motorized wheels in the front (also on trucks) which makes mounting this to any skateboard amazingly easy!ESC:Now that we have our motors we need a way to control them therefore, we got an ESC (Electronic Speed Control). The ESC used in this project is rated for 36V and 12A – 432W. …

New metering technology helps make every drop count

The statistics are alarming: In the United States alone, household leaks waste about 900 billion gallons of water each year. To put that number in perspective, that’s enough water to supply about 11 million homes annually.1 And other countries – from Europe to Asia – face similar challenges. Compounding this problem are anticipated water shortages.2But help is here. Ultrasonic technology gives water meters installed in smart buildings and smart cities the ability to detect and localize leaks as small as one drop every few seconds. Cities from Austin to Antwerp are installing high-tech smart water meters that give customers the information they need to find leaks and conserve water while helping utilities identify infrastructure leaks in aging pipes and broken water mains.“The water we have today is the only water we will ever have,” says Holly Holt-Torres, water conservation manager for the City of Dallas Water Utilities. “We have to conserve it. Technology will allow us to do that at…

Smart Home: Most Germans willing to pay significantly more for data security; security label helpful for purchasing decision

Munich, Germany – 27 June 2019 – Summertime is the season for traveling, making it the peak season for burglars. As a result, more and more consumers are keeping a remote eye on their home via camera and smartphone app. However, smart home or smart living solutions, whether it’s electric shutters, connected smoke alarms or lighting control, are often unprotected against cyber attacks. Attackers can spy out houses and residents via the Internet, steal bank details or even open digital door locks.According to a representative survey* carried out by GfK for Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY), German consumers are aware of these security risks. Most of the respondents from all age and income groups are willing to pay significantly more for devices which are protected against attacks and data theft: For 35.4 percent of the respondents the limit is up to an additional 10 percent; a further 20.9 percent would pay up to 19 percent more, and 8.4 percent would even accept a surc…

Enginursday: The Healing Power of Light

Note: This post was written for the purpose of entertainment and idle speculation only. SparkFun products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease or affliction. My wife and I recently welcomed an adorable new baby into our lives. He started out, as many infants do, with a case of jaundice. Among the remedies the doctors recommended was a fiber optic LED blanket, one that enabled us to facilitate phototherapy on our kiddo, reducing the level of bilirubin in his blood by blasting his skin with blue light. It was simple and easy - we just wrapped him up like a little human burrito in a tortilla of light. It sure seemed to do the trick. He was, however, unimpressed. I'll admit, I previously had no idea such a treatment existed, nor even that light of a specific wavelength range could have such remarkable curative powers. I see my child as a member of a bold new generation, one that will deliver mindblowing discoveries and innovations while facing down unprecedent…
